Backups/Restore Status - Completed

As of 15:45 GMT 06 Apr 17, The backups have been restored, including pages and files. At this point we have restored from all the backup data we have. Any missing files are either: - Not in the backups (deleted or another reason, somehown not in the different XML/File zips - Could be a differently named inclusion, that is, the template/file exists but with a different name (we see some templates calls (/template-name) that are acually child files (:home/file-name), there may be more of this)

So, what is still missing is either not in Wikilivres, or there but under a different name. Use search to try and find (I've updated the search text index). --Jeffmcneill (talk) 16:28, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Supages restored, but relative links to them don't work. Example: main page - Стратегия (Свечин, 1926), all links to subpages are red. Subpage: Стратегия (Свечин, 1926)/1.01. -- VadimVMog (talk) 18:44, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
So it seem to be a problem of subpages not transclusion as I thought this afternoon. -jkb- (talk) 19:07, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
Links work now. Thank you. -- VadimVMog (talk) 03:56, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Website Analytics - Completed

Hello. If everyone has no objection, I want to install [1], which is an analytics package. It allows us to track use of the site (which pages, number of visitors, where they come from, etc. I'll do this after we change the domain name. It would be really helpful to see actual use and traffic patterns. Also, Piwik can support do-not-track and the German IP anonymization, so that the legal requirements for privacy are met, and users have a choice of opting out (with do-not-track). Let me know if anyone has any feelings about this, for or against. Also, I would add a privacy policy detailing all of this at the same time, so everyone is clear about what's going on. The idea is to make the great resources already on Wikilivres more visible to the world, and also attract more people who want to contribute. Without analytics we don't know what is successful and what is not, and whether people are leaving or staying once they arrive on the site. Thoughts? --Jeffmcneill (talk) 10:38, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Sure, statistic tools are very useful and I will support it. Just one question: What does "Piwik can support do-not-track and the German IP anonymization"? -jkb- (talk) 12:54, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
For analytics, some packages track the IP address of the user, which is against German privacy law. Piwik still keeps part of the IP (which is helpful for geographic data), but anonymizes the rest to meet those privacy expectations. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 16:31, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
OK, fine. Yann (talk) 12:55, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
Piwik analytics have been deployed. Currently two bytes (e.g., the x's in of IPs are masked. The system also obeys Do-Not-Track (if that is turned on in the browser setting, no analytics data will be captured). This is a technical privacy implementation that conforms (along with a written privacy policy) to all known government privacy requirements. Read more about Cookie laws, Privacy, and Do No Track. I will provide reports to Wikilivres editors so we can better understand our visitors. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 07:40, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Edit Tools / Gadgets / Personal CSS - FIXED

Edittools doesn't seem to work, for instance I get this:

File:+ #REDIRECT+ Template:PD-pma Template:PD-pma-author </charinsert> · <charinsert></charinsert> <charinsert> + + + + + + + + </charinsert> · <charinsert><math>+</math>
Can it be fixed?
--Zephyrus (talk) 15:13, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Looking into EditTools, the info is sparse, will have to spend more time on this. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:43, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
As of --Jeffmcneill (talk) 03:57, 7 April 2017 (UTC) EditTools is not working (I've enabled CharInsert, but it requires more fixing than that). Other Gadgets also need to be enabled.
OK. After my last fix the edittols seem to work properly, now. Electron   08:46, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Personal CSS Enabled - COMPLETED

I've enabled Personal CSS support. This means if you create a page User:Username/common.css it will load CSS on all pages. Also, if you crate files like User:Username/monobook.css then that will only override when using Monobook theme.

URL Structure for Wikilivres - FIXED

URL Now it is where it should be --Jeffmcneill (talk)

Fixed this, there was a setting for Apache and also LocalSettings.php

Bot Issues and Visible Changes - FIXED

recent changes: 1) either pls enable the possibility to see bot edits per default and (like in watchlist) in references a box to hide them permanently or 2) leave the dafault as it is (hide) and make a box in preferences to show them permanently (to see Jeffmcneills edits now is normally not possible, I must opt "show bots") -jkb- (talk) 11:10, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

I think this is fixed. Please re-open discussion if not. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 15:30, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

ParserFunctions Update and Questions - FIXED

Hi, I've enabled ParserFunctions, but from what I understand there can be more than the basic functions. Can someone let me know if ParserFunctions is working as normal now (and if not, what seems to be missing)? Thanks! --Jeffmcneill (talk) 02:05, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

In templates I saw there were no problems, I will take care of it and will tell you. -jkb- (talk) 07:47, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Ping Template - Fixed and Working

template:ping, I cannot find it now, it's good (copy&past not OK till parwser functions do not work) (Lx).

This should work now, please recreate the template and check. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:12, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Ping Template works once again. Usage:
jeffmcneill will produce @jeffmcneill:

Transclusion FIXED

Hi. On the Czech main page still the transclusion of subpages doesn't work although it worked before: see Hlavní strana (= main page; the list of the subpages to be transcluded see Talk:Hlavní strana). Is the extension mw:Extension:Labeled Section Transclusion implemented? -jkb- (talk) 08:39, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

This has not been implemented. It was asked as a question as to whether it was needed, in a section above. So the answer is yes? --Jeffmcneill (talk) 10:55, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
Oh, I haven't seen it. Well, I can change all pages/subpages I would like to transclude to templates and then it would work again. I probably do, as the discussions on other WMF projects show, that the transclusion of pages in the main namespace is mostly undesirable, so I do not insist on the implementation. -jkb- (talk) 11:02, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
Sorry -jkb- I've already implemented it ^_^. Please test and see if it is working (or not). --Jeffmcneill (talk) 13:51, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
This raises a question as to what transclusion was being used for the page, and also the namespace/naming that took place. The templates look like they are Template:/Header where there is a forward slash after the colon. I don't quite understand what the use of this is, or how it is of advantage. Also, if I look at the page, there does seem to be templates (or rather, pages) named things like: If anyone can help clarify how this was meant to work. I would appreciate it. --Jeffmcneill (talk)
That's OK. Tranclusion works obviously, but not with subpages. I will simply rename the (sub)pages and it will work. I just don't know if I can do it today as I'm leaving for some 3 days, see my user page. Anyway, it will work :-) -jkb- (talk) 15:41, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
I'd be interested to see how the subpage thing was implemented, but in the cases I've seen, it may have created more work. None of the transclused fragments seem to be reused, and editing a page means going into five different (very small) pages. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 16:36, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
This is all resolved as it was a subpage issue that was the problem. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 15:41, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Purge Extension Installed - FIXED

 • one thing, for working on here, i missed; could really use that little link in the top row, that triggers a "hard purge" of the cache Lx 121 (talk) 21:24, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
Is that in another wiki (wikipedia?, wikisource?) so I could see it somewhere else? More info needed on this. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 10:53, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Does the UTCLiveClock Gadget do the right kind of purge? --Zephyrus (talk) 22:53, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
good question - but do not think so. i turned it on; definitely does not create a menu option to do purges, does not seem to purge pages either; it did not update (old) redlink to (new & correct) bluelink for a newly-created page, on a test-run. i think the code instruction in that is only used to purge the counter numerals for the clock. Lx 121 (talk) 23:26, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
all the wikimedia projects seem to have it (when you are logged in at least, not sure otherwise); in the row of items across the top; usually in a dropdown menu now, because they have so many items. some even have a normal & hard purge as separate items. will post a link to an example, once i've got myself sorted, just got up) Lx 121 (talk) 15:57, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
- ws/en was the one that had hard & ordinary purge options; if you login & go to a content page there, it should show up in the menu tab on the right, next to the search box under "more" (more>... ) Lx 121 (talk) 16:14, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
I will look into this, add to task list. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 16:38, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
I've installed and configured the Purge extension and it appears to work. Please confirm. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 02:29, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

purge works 5/5, ty muchly :) Lx 121 (talk) 03:48, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Special:Version - Fixed

Btw. The most usefull stuff that should be install here are listed (with small descripions to each and links where to take it and how to install it), eg. here -> wikisource:en:Special:Version. So if we compare the list with our Special:Version it is easy to know what is missing, yet. Electron   13:40, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

very useful info, ty :) (although i do not think we should just imitate wikisource; but it is a helpful benchmark) Lx 121 (talk) 15:59, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
I haven't said all are important but some are crucial, eg. without ParserFunctions most of templates wouldn't work properly, and without ProofreadPage proofread pages in spaces Page (the space to be be created here) and Index (the space to be be created here) woudn't work... Electron   22:18, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
ParserFunctions should work, ProofreadPage broken for now Jeffmcneill (talk)
ProofreadPage is broken for now. However, ParserFunctions should be working. Please advise.
FYI, If I run into trouble on some part of the functionality, I'm putting those parts on pause so I can get everything that is simple to work, to work. Then will revsit all the remaining broken stuff. Jeffmcneill (talk) 15:18, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Parser Function (Fixed) - Please Confirm

fixing parsers like #if (I think it is a parser function) - see e.g. [2] (added from Wikisource discuss page by --Jeffmcneill (talk) 05:55, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

I think this is fixed Jeffmcneill (talk)

Extension:CharInsert - Fixed

This extension -> is needed to be installed. Without it, MediaWiki:Edittools dosn't work properly, because <charinsert> and </charinsert> hooks are not recognized by Mediawiki and we have no edittols working properly. Electron   18:00, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Installed it, but EditTools is still broken. Further research needed. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:16, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
OK. After my last fix the edittols seem to work properly, now. Electron   13:05, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Magic Words (Included like Templates) - FIXED

Please use Use NUMBEROFARTICLES instead of Template:PAGESINNAMESPACE:0, which takes a lot longer to compute, and is less accurate (includes redirects). I've updated some of the homepages that called this Magic Word. I've updated the statistics and reverted to the old way of counting (which is probably why PAGESINNAMESPACE was being used in any case). Jeffmcneill (talk) 15:16, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

OK. But there are same things that still not working like:
 • abbreviated links: see eg. Hector Servadac - most of links on this page are abbreviated links, and they don't work. I don't know why? Eg. the abbreviated link Rozdział I should be produced by MediaWiki automaticly like the long link Rozdział I . OK, it can be change manually to long link but I think that there is samething not installed, yet... becase it works on every wiki I work on. Electron   16:36, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
The abbreviated links work, now. Electron   13:21, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Templates and Transclusion Issues - CLOSED

This has been updated to include Transclusion as well as Templates

Hi folks, in the restore, there appear to be 1,200+ templates, 800+ of which are used on a single article only. We are having such problems restoring these templates (because many are impossible to parse by the importDump.php tool). I've also found some hacker spam that put in very large ascii art that is equally impossible to parse. Please help me understand how so many pages have their own custom template. What purpose or need did this fulfill? --Jeffmcneill (talk) 19:17, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

not at all sure :/ are any of the 800+ close copies of each other?
some might be "creator" templates (specific to artist/author)
could you email me the one with the ascii art? i love that stuff! ^__^
Lx 121 (talk) 20:16, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
One template per one Article is most nonsense and shouldn't occure. But when I have no Idea which templates you mean... There were some similar templates, beeing used by different languages we.g., but never fpor one article onlly. Can these templates that make difficulties at parsing be stored and possibly imported later? - - Rests of the spam bots activity might be still there, we had really some thousands of them, and although there were three CU user, shit can happen. -jkb- (talk) 21:04, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Here are so many templates because we have "our own" templates and templates from others wikisources typical fot the language wikisource, to be compatibly to other language wikisource, e.g. I used templates typical for Polish wikisource language to be compatible to export and import articles in Polish without any problem now an in the future... Because one of the aims of this project is to be complementar to other wikisources, the compatibility is the most important thing for me. Electron   22:52, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
I appreciate that there are many templates, but the ones I am referring to are in the namespace Templates:Page: which is for a particular page. Can everyone see Special:WantedTemplates? These are the ones currently not on the wiki. It is unclear to me if they never existed, or were never backed up, or simply haven't made it over in the restore process. I've manually restored the Templates backup that Electorn provided me, so they are gone for good. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 01:14, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

ProofreadPage Extension - FIXED

I am not sure. Maybe it is connected with ProofreadPage extension that should be instaled here. To work it needs two new nemespaces: Page and Index (and maybe some more, I don't know?, but I didn't mention any others than I imported). Maybe that templates are created and instaled automaticly while this extension is instaled? On the other hand there be imported some files from commons (because of american copyrights restricions) and some pages from other wikisources wihout some tempaltes. I imported only all templates that were in namespace Template. Electron   01:33, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
I've installed/configured the ProofreadPage extension. Let me know if you also need the following:
* <>
* <>
* <>
* <>
Note: we really only want to install what is necessary to restore functionality that was being used. The more extensions that are installed, the more complexity there is to the system. Complexity means fragility. If it is needed, that is great, but if it might be needed/wanted in the future we can always address those needs at that point in time (in the future). --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:34, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
DjVu is very popular format, and tiff is too, we have both. But seems to me that ProofreadPage extension dosn't work, see: Special:IndexPages, , Btw. New namespaces you created have different nambers than in Wikisource: Index should have nr 106 not 252 (as is now), Index talk should have nr 107 not 253, Page should have nr 104 not 250, Page talk should have nr 105 not 251. I think it is very important, because the namespaces are recognise by the numbers if we export or import pages. Pages in the Page namespace were imported and they exist but now they are not visible to be exist, but can be listed -> - seems that they are still are in mainspace nr 0. It maybe be because of this, that before created new namespace it is recomended not to be any pages on the wiki with the name consists of "Newnamespace:Name" e.g. "Page:Name" or they should be previously temporary delated (or renamed eg: "Page_Name") and after new namespace is created undelated (or renamed to previous name). If we working in other way we case problems. Electron   14:25, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for this info. I'm flying blind with the pagespace/namespace configuration info. ProofreadPage creates new namespaces, and may have affected the most recent restore/imports. Regardless this can be remedied once the final imports are finished. As far as "not visible to be listed" I'm not sure what that means. Can you provide an example to walk me through what is not right? --Jeffmcneill (talk) 11:06, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
OK. I mean the list of the pages with the prefix Page: was produced and they were shown by sytem like existing pages as "blue links" but when I clicded one of these blue links the sytem "says" there is no such page, as it was the "red link"... what is a strange thing for me. But I am not an expert of MediaWiki. Electron   16:01, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
What about numbers of namespaces (Index:, Page:, an so on...) that are produced by the ProofreadPage extension I was wrong, see:, maybe on wikisource they have some special ones, who knows... Electron   01:40, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

OH! all the .djvu templates? i THINK those are for creating .djvu "books" out of a bunch of content-pages (& potentially making the djvu downloadable); which is why each 1 is different/unique. you can find examples all over ws/en's content. i'm not sure if it was ever implemented @wikilivres successfully or not. beyond a basic description of what it's for or related to, i can't tell you much; not a coder, sorry. but you should be able to see fully-implemented examples on "finished" books @ ws. Lx 121 (talk) 04:53, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Lx, anyone else can tell whether this template-to-djvu ever worked, or more details on how it was meant to at WikiLivres? --Jeffmcneill (talk) 06:25, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
comment - just going by the titles; since each template is a different page or section #, it looks like the templates either have that page of content included on them, or some kind of a link to the page with that content, to "pull it in" to the djvu. Lx 121 (talk) 06:35, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
like so: Lx 121 (talk) 06:36, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

ProofreadPage Extension Re-Enabled - FIXED

Hellp, please test the ProofreadPage functionality. I've reconfigured the namespace and the articles in File: and so forth are now visible. Also, doing a lot of job processing (background indexing, link-rebuilding) that has only been processed once per pageview. Please let me know if something is/is not working regarding ProofreadPage and related functionality. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 09:28, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Most of our indexes are connected with djvu files. They don't work properly if here is no djvu handler, I suppose. See: Manual:How_to_use_DjVu_with_MediaWiki Electron   11:56, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
I've added this as a Github Issue/Task #52 and made this a priority. I see the errors that happen with this issue. Google also complains about these pages when it tries to index them. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:18, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
I have installed DjVU support, and it appears to work now. Please test and report. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 11:38, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Ok, it's been a week. I am assuming this is working for everyone. Reople later if not. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:11, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Can we have all the new fancy extensions (Thanks, etc.)?

Wikilvres templates on Wikipedia and Wikisource - CLOSED

The Wikilivres templates on Wikipedia and Wikisource still link to the old, and now defunct, website. Could somebody fix wikipedia:en:template:Wikilivres and the Bengali, Japanese, Polish, Turkish, Vietnamese versions? Could somebody fix wikisource:en:Template:Wikilivres and the Spanish and Russian versions? I tried but I didn't know what I was doing. Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 12:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Maybe we should wait a moment. We haven't decided the domain name, yet; is paid by Koavf. It will be working to 2019. The problem is how to gain control over it, that it will lead here, to our new place of hosting. After that we can think, is it a good idea to change it to something else, maybe the better one. If it work, we will have 2 years to do this. See also: the last part ot the topics: [4] and [5] It should be dane by changing interwiki to wikilivres generally, on Phefabricator. Electron   13:13, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Hmmm. OK. In the mean time, do you think I should remove the Wikilivres templates I added to Wikipedia articles? Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 13:24, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Why? If nobody protests... Electron   13:27, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
It is painful to see the interwiki broken, but perhaps we should wait to see what happens with If the registrar changes the nameservers for us, then we are back in business with the old domain name. If they don't (let's say by end of April), then we can move to a different domain name, and let everyone know about the change. Is that a reasonable deadline? Note that if we use one domain and get back in May or later, I can always reroute, so any interwiki changes would still work. It's just a matter of waiting to see if we really have to alert everyone to change their address or not. More thoughts? --Jeffmcneill (talk)

is this resolved now? Lx 121 (talk) 09:13, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Yes, it is now resolved. Now that the domain name is back, the templates on Wikipedia and Wikisource work just like they did before. I have recently added the template on Wikipedia to several more pages. Simon Peter Hughes (talk)

Views counter - CLOSED

It was a nice feature -- to show views counter at the bottom of every page. -- VadimVMog (talk) 03:34, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

I've added this as a task in Github Issue #53 --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:20, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi @VadimVMog:, this has been discontinued by MediaWiki (it is only in older releases) and was abandoned as an extension.
The main reasons against are: it was not accurate (hits vs. users vs. views), and the data is far inferior to an analytics package (which we have), and also as a measure of popularity encouraged "page refreshes" for those pages people "like".
I will provide some popularity metrics to the Wikilivres community at regular intervals (monthly, most likely), so that some useful feedback is available. In particular, pages unique visitors and time on page indicate a level of engagement.
I will also look at improving the home pages (of different languages) by providing this information per language, that is, what pages are popular. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 03:44, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
I do want to add @VadimVMog:, that I too was looking forward to having the counters on the pages, as it does provide some information (if not accurate) and can help people realize how popular Wikilivres pages are. I will keep this in mind and try and come up with a way to provide this in some way that will meet other requirements. Also, though, we lost this data since it was in the database of the old system, so we are starting fresh now. Maybe x visits in the past month might be some way of doing this. New issue #68 in Github. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:05, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
OK, thank you. Yes, it was a quick way to estimate, how popular a page is. -- VadimVMog (talk) 15:21, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Localization and Namespace Issues - CLOSED

Localization (is very important (!), if it doesn't work [not clear now], we must fix it)

Agree, but it is unclear what kinds of localization need support. See own section above Jeffmcneill (talk)

Fix namespaces (where is the Wikilivres namespace content from the old site?)

Whatever we had, has been restored. Please advise on whether it seems to be back and available. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:26, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

I've just noticed that there's a mistake at the top of the recent changes page -- DONE

In the list of different language versions, after Spanish comes a link to Hauptseite, the German main page. The Spanish main page is Portada. It would also be nice to have add a link to the Esperanto main page now that we have one. Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 10:17, 22 April 2017 (UTC)

OK. I've fixed the mistake and added Esperanto. Electron   10:42, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
